Training of Laboratory Managers

Addressing Customer Needs via Quality Control, Quality Assurance And Optimizing Laboratory Procedures

As Required by ISO/IEC 17025

University of Nairobi crest The Analytical Laboratory Managers Association (ALMA) in conjunction with regional East and Southern Africa Laboratory Managers Association (E-SALAMA) is charged with the responsibility of enhancing exchange of ideas among laboratory managers from Industries, Institutions and Academia. This exchange creates an arena where those concerned can interact positively by sharing their day-to-day experiences/challenges.

The shared experiences include:

  • Managing the labs, University of Nairobi campus
  • Leadership,
  • Procurement,
  • Maintenance and repairs,
  • Communication,
  • Laboratory quality as well as costing analytical work,
  • Validation,
  • Handling customers and accreditation issues,
  • Health,
  • Safety, and
  • Environment. University of Nairobi building

The long-term goal is to acquire solutions to many problems facing a laboratory manager.

The first E-SALAMA workshop was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on November 12-15, 2002 and the second workshop was held in Kampala, Uganda on December 15-19, 2003. This was after realizing the problems being faced by practicing scientists in industries and institutions as a result of missing link between science teaching and management, a program most of our students go through. Prof. Claude A. Lucchesi, the founder of Analytical Laboratory Managers Association (ALMA), played a significance role in starting AfricALMA/E-SALAMA.

The two workshops have triggered great enthusiasm among the laboratory managers in the region. It is anticipated that the third workshop, coming later this year, will draw more participants from within and outside the region.
