Management of Health and Safety in the Laboratories

The Analytical Laboratory Managers Association (ALMA) in conjunction with regional East and Southern Africa Laboratory Managers Association (E-SALAMA) is charged with the responsibility of enhancing exchange of ideas among laboratory managers from Industries, Institutions and Academia. It creates an arena whereby those concerned can interact positively by sharing their day-to-day experiences/challenges. The shared experiences include:

  • Managing the labs,
  • Leadership,
  • Procurement,
  • Maintenance and repairs,
  • Communication,
  • Laboratory quality as well as costing analytical work,
  • Validation,
  • Handling customers, and
  • Accreditation issues for health, safety, and environment.

Our long-term goal is to acquire solutions to many problems facing a laboratory manager.

The 1st E-SALAMA Workshop was held in Tanzania in December 2002, the 2nd Workshop was held in Uganda in December 2003 and the 3rd was held in Kenya in December 2004.

It was agreed during the 1st Workshop that every year the E-SALAMA holds a training workshop in one of the countries in East or Southern Africa. As part of the resolution during the last workshop it was agreed that the next workshop be held in Tanzania.

It is with great honor, therefore, that we announce the 4th East and Southern Africa Laboratory Managers Training Workshop to be held in Morogoro, Tanzania from 12–16th September 2005.
