Laboratory Quality Assurance
A Tool for Enhancement of Local and International Competitiveness in Trade, Research and Development
The Analytical Laboratory Managers Association (ALMA) in conjunction with regional E-SALAMA is charged with the responsibility of enhancing exchange of ideas among laboratory managers from Industries, Institutions and Academia. It creates an arena whereby those concerned can interact positively by sharing their day-to-day experiences/challenges.
Among the universe of laboratory arena, the shared experiences include:
- Managing the labs,
- Leadership, procurement,
- Maintenance and repairs,
- Communication,
- Laboratory quality as well as costing analytical work,
- Validation,
- Handling customers, and
- Accreditation issues, health, Safety, and Environment.
The long-term goal is to acquire solutions to many problems facing a laboratory manager.
The prior AfricALMA/E-SALAMA Workshops were held:
-
November 12–15, 2002
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania -
December 15–19, 2003
Kampala, Uganda -
December 13–17, 2004
Nairobi, Kenya -
September 12–16, 2005
Morogoro Tanzania
These workshops were initiated after realizing the problems being faced by practicing scientists in industries and institutions as a result of missing link between science teaching and management, a program most of our students go through. Prof. Claude A. Lucchesi, the founder of Analytical Laboratory Managers Association (USA) has played a significance role in starting AfricALMA/E-SALAMA.
The four workshops have triggered great enthusiasm among the laboratory managers in the region. It is anticipated that the fifth workshop, coming later this year, will draw more participants from within and outside the region.
