Better, Cheaper, Faster: The Analytical Lab Manager Needs All Three!

As Analytical Laboratory Managers, we often hear the adage “Better, Cheaper, Faster—You get to pick two.” In today’s economy with a continuous drive in most academic, government and industrial settings to do more with less; the lab manager is faced with many challenges. Clients expect the highest quality data and results at a lower cost and as fast as possible. With the ever increasing costs of instruments and supplies; the need to pay competitive salaries to attract and retain the right skill sets; and more and more laboratory and data system automation; the lab manager can not succeed by just “picking two” and must deliver better, cheaper, and faster results. While the analytical laboratory is essential to most operations and businesses; it is also in many cases one of the more costly components to operate and maintain. As lab managers we are often faced with difficult decisions and have to make trade-offs in order to meet budgets or remain cost competitive. This year’s ALMA conference focuses on real world experiences and ways that laboratory managers have succeeded in improving the quality of their results, reports, and data; lowered (or at least controlled the increases) in the costs of running an analytical lab; and came up with creative solutions to increase throughput and lower turn around times. We hope to learn from other lab managers through their presentations, and the interactions with other lab managers at this conference, how we can better deliver value to our clients.⇑

Roundtable Discussions, Thursday Afternoon.

The round table discussions will enable attendees to share experiences in a small group setting. The three topics are:

  • Better: With the continuous improvements in instrument sensitivity and capability; software and data processing capabilities; and higher client expectations; many lab managers must find ways to improve and maintain the quality of their analytical results. ISO and other quality systems are one way to standardize and ensure consistent quality; but creative lab managers may have found other ways to improve results.
  • Cheaper: As instruments and supplies get more expensive, and the costs for attracting and retaining quality chemists increase; lab managers are faced with running a very expensive business. How can we control or manage costs while still delivering quality results on time?
  • Faster: Laboratory automation is critical to achieving the needed throughput in many lab settings. Since time equals money, the more we can streamline our operations and reduce turn around times the more cost effective our analytical operations become. LIMS and other data management solutions can greatly increase turn around times; but other solutions may have improved things even more.⇑

The Analytical Laboratory in a Regulated Environment

2-Day Workshop: November 6–7, 2007    Enrollment Fee: $945    Instructor: Tony Montana

This workshop is designed for those who either perform laboratory work or manage a laboratory that requires compliance with regulatory or quality system requirements. The course provides a broad overview of quality, standards, and compliance regulations in the laboratory, as well as a review of the laboratory system components that support compliance with quality system regulations as well as science based laboratory management.

Key topics include:

  • Similarities and differences between cGMP, GLP, TQM, ISO 9001:2000, and Six Sigma quality.
  • Successfully managing a quality system within an analytical laboratory environment.
  • Laboratory organization, personnel, and analyst training and certification requirements.
  • Laboratory certification and accreditation (ISO 17025).
  • Calibration, qualification, and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Review of facility requirements.
  • Laboratory deviations, failure investigations, and compliance with OOS requirements.
  • Test method development, system suitability, and method verification and validation.
  • Laboratory documentation, SOPs, project planning, reporting, record keeping, and management.
  • Change control requirements for the laboratory and control systems for implementing change.
  • Specification setting and sampling plans.
  • Control of laboratory and reference standards
  • Overview of good laboratory practices for testing facility operations.

Maximizing Efficiency and Effectiveness in the Global Analytical Laboratory

2-Day Workshop: November 6–7, 2007    Enrollment Fee: $945    Instructor: Jan Damm

This interactive workshop aims to bridge gaps between analytical laboratories of multi-site companies, between QC and R&D labs, and between the laboratory and regulatory authorities. The workshop is oriented towards analytical lab managers that want to have a “first-time-right” start in handling company wide harmonization of analytical methods, procedures and processes leading to time and cost-savings. Key topics here are harmonization of procedures for Method Development, Method Validation and Method Transfer. Important for the interface with the regulatory authorities (both from a GxP and business perspective) are a suitable, effective quality level (at acceptable costs) incorporating the application of modern concepts like Process Analytical Technology, Risk Based Approach, and Less Paper Lab (regulated electronic archiving).

Upon completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Develop, describe and validate methods in such a way that they are applicable in various analytical laboratories of your multi-site company.
  • Transfer analytical methods efficiently and effectively, also from R&D to QC labs.
  • Identify efficiency improvements in procurement processes for the Analytical Lab.
  • Identify the key aspects for implementing Risk-Based Approaches, PAT and “paperless” labs.
  • Recognise pitfalls within the global harmonisation process. ⇑

Performance Management of the Laboratory

This one-day workshop takes a strategic view of the laboratory system in the context of current quality philosophies to determine options for achieving best management practices. Experiences will be shared to provide insight into the obstacles and expected outcomes for the various management approaches. The workshop is designed for current managers who are seeking innovative ways to improve their leadership skills to develop closer connections with the business or for chemists aspiring to laboratory management.

Authentic Leadership for the Twenty-first Century

What constitutes “authentic leadership” in the lab of the 21st century. Where are you most effective; where do you need support? We’ll use an assessment tool, the DiSC®, to help you identify your personal style. The goal of DiSC® is to give you personal information that will help to ensure your improvement and success as a leader. You will develop an awareness of your personal leadership profile and capabilities as you develop your leadership style.

Staffing for Excellence

1-Day Workshop: Wednesday, November 7, 2007    Enrollment Fee: $495    Instructor: Alan Cabelly

How do you hire people? How do you fire people? In this workshop we will cover these processes from beginning to end. The staffing process includes the acquisition, selection, and placement of employees to achieve the strategic human resource goals of your company. While this may seem academic, you need to accomplish these tasks on a periodic basis. One significant error will cost you time and money.

This workshop will cover the process from beginning to end. We will:

  • Define job duties and write job descriptions (yes, we will actually write job descriptions on the spot, and during the workshop we will accomplish the tasks listed below)
  • Assess the position and job description to develop effective recruiting ads and sources for applicants
  • Learn how to screen resumes
  • Identify factors that will lead to successful workers
  • Write job related questions
  • Interview candidates for the job
  • Learn how to do reference checking so that you can get good job related information about the candidate
  • Make selection decisions
  • Prepare letters of acceptance and rejection
  • Identify candidates for promotions, transfers, demotions, and terminations

Participants are asked (if possible) to bring the job description for their job, as well as for jobs that report to them. ⇑

Workshop Leaders

Dr. Anthony J. Montana currently serves as Vice President of Scientific Operations with Garden State Nutritionals in Fairfield, NJ. He has over 30 years experience in the areas of Laboratory and Quality Systems Management within the Chemical, Pharmaceutical, and Nutraceutical Industries. Dr. Montana is a past-President of ALMA and he has published and presented over 50 papers and workshops in the areas of Analytical Chemistry, Technical Management, and the Quality Process.

Dr. Wayne Collins managed the laboratories of Solvay Polymers for 24 years prior to joining Thermo Electron Corporation in productivity services in 2005. Wayne served as the President of ALMA for the year 2000, writes and publishes the ALMA e-News, is the current Editor of Managing the Modern Laboratory, and is a member of the editorial board of Lab Manager Magazine.

Alan Cabelly, PhD, SPHR, has been a Human Resource Management faculty member at Portland State University since 1980, and has served as Area Director for the Management/HRM Area since 1997. He teaches HRM at the undergraduate, graduate, and executive levels to diverse groups in the public and private sectors, nationally and internationally. In 1981, Prof. Cabelly founded the PSU Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)/Northwest Human Resource Management Association (NHRMA), which has won the Superior Merit Award for 23 consecutive years. In his spare time he runs marathons.

Dr. Jan Damm completed his PhD at the University of Leiden and then joined the R&D organization of Organon in 1989. At Organon he held positions as a research scientist, group leader BioMolecular Research, Department Head of the Analytical Control Laboratories of Quality Assurance, and is currently senior director of Quality Systems. He chaired the global harmonization steering committee within Organon as well as the international committee for Validation of Automated Laboratory Systems. He was a board member of the Dutch Association for Analytical Laboratory Managers and co-organizer of several bi-annual conferences of the European ALMA organization. ⇑

All meetings and workshops will be held at the Wyndham St. Anthony, 300 East Travis, San Antonio, Texas 78205. This Wyndham historic hotel was built in 1909. Wireless internet access is available in public areas. This historic hotel, built in 1909, is just a stroll away from world-famous attractions like the Riverwalk, the Alamo and Hemisfair Plaza.

Getting To The St. Anthony

San Antonio International Airport (SAT) provides connections to all major domestic and international hubs. The airport is 8 miles from the hotel. Current ground transportation costs are $12 for shuttle and $18 for taxi from SAT to the hotel.

Take Hwy 281 South (IH-37 south). Exit Houston St. and turn RIGHT. Follow Broadway. Turn LEFT. Follow to Travis St. and turn RIGHT. Hotel is located one block on left. Approximately 20 minutes.
