Is there someone who helped mentor you as a laboratory manager? Recognize their contribution to your career and to the laboratory management profession; nominate them for this award.

ALMA Award

The purpose of the ALMA Distinguished Service Award for Laboratory Management is to recognize outstanding performance and service to the profession of analytical laboratory management. It is presented annually at the ALMA U.S. Conference held each fall.

The Award consists of a plaque and $3,000 plus up to $1,000 travel to attend the ALMA annual meeting. It began in 2002 and is sponsored by Agilent Technologies.

Dr. John S. Sadowski

The fourth ALMA Distinguished Service Award for Analytical Laboratory Management was presented to Dr. John S. Sadowski at ALMA’s 26th Conference in Gaithersburg, MD during October, 2005.

Dr. John S. Sadowski is the Director of the Corporate Research Services Department (CRSD) at Air Products and Chemicals, Inc in Allentown, Pennsylvania. As Director of CRSD he is responsible for the Corporate Analytical Center of Excellence, the Technical Data Systems IT group, the Instrumentation and Equipment Technology Group and the High Throughput Experimentation Center of Excellence. He is also the chairperson of the Technology Operating Committee at Air Products. In addition, John serves on an industrial advisory committee for the University of Pittsburgh Chemistry Department. Previously, John was Director of Technology for the Polymer and Industrial Chemicals Divisions and Technical Service Manager of the Polymer Chemicals Division at Air Products. John received a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Maryland and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under Professor George Whitesides.

John is past President of ALMA and a member of the Board of Directors. John founded a local ALMA chapter in the New Jersey / Pennsylvania area that has met three times a year for the past four years drawing thirty plus attendees at each meeting. In addition, he helped organize chapters in the Chicago, Maryland and Ohio areas. John is also an active member of the Directors of Industrial Research – Analytical Group, the American Chemical Society and IRI. He has presented papers on leadership and continuous improvement at several ALMA, EuroALMA, DIR-AG and Pittcon conferences.

The Corporate Research Services Department has been a benchmark on safety performance at Air Products and was recently recognized with a Diversity Leadership Award from the company and a President’s Volunteer Service Award for community service. The latter included recognition from President George Bush.
