ALMA Award
The purpose of the ALMA Distinguished Service Award for Laboratory Management is to recognize outstanding performance and service to the profession of analytical laboratory management. It is presented annually at the ALMA U.S. Conference held each fall.
The Award consists of a plaque and $3,000 plus up to $1,000 travel to attend the ALMA annual meeting. It began in 2002 and is sponsored by Agilent Technologies.
2006 Winner

Dr. Wayne Collins
The fifth ALMA Distinguished Service Award for Analytical Laboratory Management was presented to Dr. Wayne Collins at ALMA’s 26th Conference in Portland, OR during October, 2006.
Dr. Collins is currently Productivity Services Manager for Thermo Electron Corporation. Previously, he was the laboratory manager for Solvay Polymers (now Ineos) in Deer Park Texas for 24 years. He has worked as a researcher studying the free radical distribution in flames as a National Research Council-National Academy of Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (Houston, TX) and the chemistry and physics of explosives with Monsanto Research Corporation (Miamisburg, OH). Wayne earned a MS degree in physical chemistry from Stephen F. Austin State University (Nacogdoches, TX), a Ph.D. in inorganic/analytical chemistry from the University of Houston (Houston, TX), and a MBA with emphasis in marketing from Wright State University (Dayton, OH).
Collins served as President of the Analytical Laboratory Managers Association in 2000 and continues to serve on the Board of Directors. He is currently Editor of Managing the Modern Laboratory, writes and published the ALMA E-News, and conducts laboratory management workshops worldwide. Wayne was also one of the founding members of the Houston Area Lab Managers Group in 1996. He has published over 35 articles on laboratory management, 21 research journal articles, co-authored one book, and has given invited presentations at professional conferences in the US, Europe, and Australia.
