Is there someone who helped mentor you as a laboratory manager? Recognize their contribution to your career and to the laboratory management profession; nominate them for this award.

ALMA Award

The purpose of the ALMA Distinguished Service Award for Laboratory Management is to recognize outstanding performance and service to the profession of analytical laboratory management. It is presented annually at the ALMA U.S. Conference held each fall.

The Award consists of a plaque and $3,000 plus up to $1,000 travel to attend the ALMA annual meeting. It began in 2002 and is sponsored by Agilent Technologies.

Dr. Anthony J. Montana

The seventh ALMA Distinguished Service Award for Analytical Laboratory Management was presented to Dr. Anthony J. Montana at ALMA’s 29th Conference near Boston, MA during October, 2008.

Dr. Anthony J. Montana currently serves as Vice President of Scientific Operations with Garden State Nutritionals in Fairfield, NJ. Prior to joining GSN in 2000, Dr. Montana served as Senior Director of Analytical, Safety, and Quality Systems with the Revlon Research Center, and was formerly Director of Analytical Technology with Warner-Lambert. He has more than 32 years of laboratory management experience within the pharmaceutical, chemical, and personal care industries. He is also the author of over 35 technical publications, and has presented numerous short courses in the areas of quality systems, laboratory management, and team dynamics at technical conferences across the U.S. Dr. Montana is a past-president of ALMA, and has made presentations at several ALMA conferences. He also chaired the 1994 ALMA Conference at the Xerox Center in Leedsburgh, Virginia, In addition, he also organized the first ALMA Symposium on Laboratory Management which was presented at the Pittsburgh Conference in 1996.

Dr. Montana is also a past-President of the American Oil Chemists Society, and serves on the editorial advisory boards of Managing the Modern Laboratory (MML) and Pharmaceutical Formulation and Quality (PFQ) magazine. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in physical/analytical chemistry from Columbia University, and his MBA degree in Management from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
