ALMA Award
The purpose of the ALMA Distinguished Service Award for Laboratory Management is to recognize outstanding performance and service to the profession of analytical laboratory management. It is presented annually at the ALMA U.S. Conference held each fall.
The Award consists of a plaque and $3,000 plus up to $1,000 travel to attend the ALMA annual meeting. It began in 2002 and is sponsored by Agilent Technologies.

The eighth ALMA Distinguished Service Award for Analytical Laboratory Management was presented to at ALMA’s 30th Conference at Atlanta, GA during October, 2009.
Jan Børge Jakobsen, Director Analytical Sciences, R&D GE Healthcare, Oslo, manages a group of 46 people and has 14 years of experience in parenteral pharmaceutical product development across analytical development, pharmaceutical process development and clean room manufacturing for clinical trials and 6 years manufacturing experience within biotechnology. He is fluent in coaching and directing people with different backgrounds, non-academic and academic, R&D and manufacturing, global and local environment. He has coached analytical teams to develop specifications and methods, characterization and write adjacent documentation. He has also contributed to commercialization of 2 new products and the progress of several products beyond phase 1/2 clinical studies.
Jan is result- and deliverable-focused, engaged, a clear thinker and viewed as a pragmatic leader who thrives in a project-based environment where there is a “sense of urgency.” He has high degree of self-motivation and eye for continuous improvements and motivates others by involvement, enthusiasm and setting clear and challenging goals.
Jan has a broad range of hobbies including ocean and mountain/fresh water fishing, grouse-hunting, cross-country skiing, downhill and snowboard, plays football once a week and is Chairman of a small family-owned event-company.
