The Analytical Laboratory Managers Association (ALMA) is an international organization that helps analytical laboratory managers to develop better management skills and practices. ALMA contributes to improved analytical lab performance/customer satisfaction by promoting discussion of practices and programs relating to quality, cost control, and employee development.

Our previous successful conferences in Norway, The Netherlands, and Germany have gathered 70-90 Analytical Laboratory Managers from up to 12 countries in Europe and outside Europe. The attendees have broadened their management knowledge, shared their expertise, and extended their network.

If you are struggling with these issues, this conference will provide insights to the answers to these questions.

You will have an opportunity to network and exchange ideas with other managers and leaders who share your goal for management excellence, and you will leave with practical tools that you can implement in your own laboratory.

This Workshop takes a strategic view of the laboratory system in the context of current quality management philosophies to determine options for achieving best practices. Experiences will be shared to provide insight into the obstacles and expected outcomes for the various approaches. The Workshop is designed for current managers who are seeking innovative ways to improve operations and to develop closer connections with the business.

Key topics include:

  • Insuring analytical quality
  • Setting and maintaining staffing standards
  • Managing physical assets
  • Setting and measuring service standards
  • Selecting the right organizational structure
  • Relationship management
  • Information systems
  • Quality standards and benchmarking
  • Safety performance
  • Setting staff objectives
  • Financial performance
  • Adapting to new technologies such as on-line analyzers

Performance Optimisation in the Global Analytical Laboratory

1-Day Workshop: May 12, 2004

Dr. Alexander Debets, Organon Development GmbH, Waltrop, Germany

Dr. Jan Damm, N.V. Organon, Oss, The Netherlands

Enrollment Fee: €500

This Workshop is oriented towards analytical lab managers that want to have a “first-time-right” start in handling company wide harmonization of analytical methods and procedures leading to time and cost-savings. Harmonization of the Chemistry Manufacturing and Control (CMC) process, encompassing—among others—technology transfer, documentation, development, validation & transfer of analytical methods and procedures, is a prerequisite for efficient and effective development of new products. Especially multinational companies, having development and production sites in various countries, face the challenge of keeping control over their global development activities. Therefore, attuning the CMC process is becoming more important than ever. Also when the product has reached the market harmonized procedures are a key element in the efficiency of Quality Control (QC) labs.

Key topics include:

  • Method Development
  • Method Validation
  • Method Transfer
  • Equipment
  • Validating computerized systems
  • Electronic Records & Signatures, Documentation & reporting
  • Organization of the CMC process

News & Views session: How does your quality system cope with FDA’s 21st century GMP, risked-based approach and PAT?

Should I Stay or Should I Go? The Do’s and Don’ts of Knowledge Worker Management

1-Day Workshop: May 12, 2004

Dr. Jo Døhl, Amersham Health, Oslo, Norway

Enrollment Fee: €500

This Workshop is intended to give practical advice to managers who have risen from the ranks of knowledge workers to take on people leadership responsibilities. The Workshop will be of particular value to leaders in knowledge based organisations who have been promoted to their management level primarily by merit of their achievements as knowledge workers, not necessarily based on their leadership virtues. In order to succeed in their roles it is of paramount importance for these leaders to become aware of the inherent strengths and weaknesses of their organisational heritage and painstakingly work to develop true leadership qualities. Otherwise the professional strength of these leaders may eventually prove inhibitory to success. Moreover, there is a substantial body of evidence indicating that the traditional approach to staff motivation through incentives and “carrot & stick mentality” does not by itself pave the road to competitiveness and commercial success. Increasingly, knowledge workers join and leave companies based on the presence or absence of opportunities for personal growth.
